Apparently, our winters will be getting a lot colder these next few years with HBO’s killer series Game of Thrones already developing spin off series.
As HBO’s wildly successful series comes to an end in season 8, the wails of the fanboys/girl can be heard from every far-reaching kingdom. But it ain’t over till George Martin sings! HBO is currently in negotiations with four writers in the hopes of several new spin off series. Although there are no timelines or plot spoilers yet, fans everywhere are speculating about what the new series will focus on. Could it be a prequel series to season one of the show, focusing on Robert Baratheon’s rebellion and the depressing love story between Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark?
Or, assuming all loose ends won’t be tied up, the series could be a sequel following the story of the new ruler of the seven kingdoms. Maybe we could learn more of the Westeros history with The Children of the Forest, the First Men, and the origins of the White Walkers. Or we could discover the origins of one particular House, the subsequent trials and scandals. A character-focused spin off giving an entirely new perspective to the events of the original series is also a distinct possibility.
George R Martin’s much-anticipated book The Winds of Winter is also in the running to fill gaps in the Thrones timeline. Even Martin’s unfinished works – and there are a few – may be fodder for the scriptwriters. The writers to lead this fantasy challenge are not yet officially named, but are believed to be Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Carly Wray (Mad Men, The Leftovers), Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island) and Brian Helgeland (Legend).
A GOT spokesperson, as usual, revealed little to Variety magazine: “We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in.”
Gee, thanks for that.
For now, enjoy the last of GOT and prep yourselves for the harshest winter yet.
